Tips to Keep Your Hair Healthy & Growing

by LeAnn Cyr |

Having long, luscious hair is something that people dream about their whole lives. From perms and mullets, to blowouts and bobs, hairstyles can vary depending on the look you want to have. If you struggle with your hair, don’t like what you have going on, or simply want something new — it may be time to make some changes. Not everyone can naturally grow their hair down to their butt, but if you strive to have longer hair there are steps you can take to make sure your hair is healthy enough to do so. :

Eat Nutritious Foods

If having longer hair is on the top of your list, you can add some nutritious foods to your routine that will help promote hair growth. As you grow older, it’s critical to incorporate certain foods into your diet because the vitamins and minerals are essential to help it continue growing, and they also prevent hair loss.

Some foods you can eat more frequently for healthier, stronger hair include eggs, spinach, berries, nuts, fatty fish, beans, and seeds — just to name a few. Eggs are a great source of protein and biotin, two nutrients that may promote hair growth. Your hair follicles are made of mostly protein, which is why it’s important to feed it added protein. Biotin is essential for producing a hair protein called keratin. Research shows that consuming more biotin can help improve hair growth in people with a biotin deficiency.

Get A Trim Regularly

Some people get their hair trimmed or cut once a year. Although that may be the most cost-effective, trimming your hair regularly helps eliminate split ends that lead to damaged or broken hair. When you cut off the breakage, or frayed split ends, your hair will appear more smooth, shiny, and voluminous. If you want healthy-looking hair, prioritize getting it trimmed every 4 months or so.

Don’t Overwash

If you deal with greasy, oily hair, you might wash your hair more frequently to give it a better appearance. However, how frequently you wash your hair should be based on how many natural oils are produced on your scalp. When you overwash your hair, you irritate the area resulting in more oil production, dry scalp, and broken hair. It also strips the hair of its natural oils, and can lead to a buildup of residue from the products you’re using.

You should only wash your hair once a day if necessary. It’s suggested that you go as long as you can without washing, so that your hair can restore its natural barrier. Some people can go as long as 3 days before washing again. Determine your hair type and make the most suitable decision for yourself!
