The Difference Between Body Butters, Lotions, and Creams

by LeAnn Cyr |

When you have dry skin, you may reach for just about any moisturizer to remedy the symptoms. But, it’s important to use the correct moisturizer to properly alleviate the problem. The key to having plump, hydrated skin begins with finding the right products. The 3 most popular types of skin hydrating products are body butters, lotions, and creams. Do you know how and when to use each one to get the most out of it? Continue reading to learn more about the differences between them:

Body Lotion

Lotions are the lightest of the three products because they contain the most water and provide a thin application. There are different lotions designed for different skin types, but generally speaking, look to lotions if your skin is not too dry, and issues with hydration are minor. Think of lotion as a quick fix to a small problem.

Skin Cream

Skin creams are the next step up in terms of hydration. They serve as a happy-medium between body lotions and body butters. Typically, skin creams are thinner than body butters, yet still thicker than lotions. They attempt to combine the moisture-locking power of body butter with lotion-like thinness. Skin creams can work well for you if your skin tends to dry out as the day goes on. Rather than applying lotion various times, a skin cream should fulfill your hydration needs for much longer.

Body Butter

Body butter is the thickest or most viscous of the three types of hydrating products. Some of these products actually have the consistency of real butter. Thanks to its consistency, body butters in general have the strongest scent, and even last longer than both lotions and creams. The thickness of body butter is a crucial factor in how well they work, as body butters are intended to both deliver skin enhancing/healing nutrients, as well as lock in the moisture that exists in your skin.

To get the most value out of using body butters, apply after getting out of the shower or bath. This will lock in the water your skin has just absorbed.
